Manchester United beat Newcastle United 2-0 to score the Carabao Cup at Wembley Stadium this past Sunday, snapping a six-year trophy drought. Casemiro's head strike and a Marcus Rashford score gave Newcastle plenty to counteract in their first final of a League Cup appearance since 1976.

United last won a major trophy during their 2017 Europa League season, but they looked confident in their performance against Eddie Howe's team.

Bruno Fernandes, Man Utd player said, “"It has been an amazing period, first trophy of the season, but we want more -- it is not enough for this club, we want more and we need more because our standards demand more."

At a chaotic opening, there weren't many clear-cut chances, but on 33 minutes, United took the lead by scoring the first of two fast goals as sturdy midfielder Casemiro sparked chaos across half of Wembley. As Luke Shaw provided a diving pass from a long free kick, the Brazil international brilliantly flicked a header onto the far corner Following a VAR review, it was decided that he'd played marginally offside.

Six minutes later, with the momentum in their advantage, United increased their advantage when Newcastle's Botman assisted Rashford in scoring on his own goal. Rashford was passed into the back by a charging Wout Weghorst.

As United strengthened their hold on the trophy, Botman deflected the 25-year-attempt from a tight angle up past the stretched Loris Karius.

Botman originally incorrectly attributed the goal as an own goal, but later on Sunday Rashford was given credit for it, giving the England international his first final goal in seven appearances.

The second half saw Newcastle make a stronger but futile comeback, with Joelinton getting the closest but seeing his shot expertly deflected by Lisandro Martinez as United easily sealed the victory.

During the trophy presentation, Newcastle's supporters dispersed after creating a swarm of black and white with plastic flags on the west side of the stadium during the final minutes of play. The team has now lost all nine of their games played at Wembley, a streak that started with the 1974 FA Cup final.

Man United supporters, on the other hand, were raucously cheering as Bruno Fernandes lifted the trophy, hoping it was the initial of some under Erik ten Hag.

The first season under the former Ajax boss has been better for United. They remain within the Europa League draw and currently sit third within the Premier League. After Jose Mourinho left Old Trafford, Ten Hag is the only manager to do so.
