Elon purchased Twitter in October and introduced paid verified ticks in the first two weeks of the acquisition.
As a result of Elon Musk's most recent Twitter announcement, several Bollywood superstars, including Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, and even politicians Yogi Adityanath, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi, have lost their Twitter verified status.

Even globally recognised cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have lost the blue ticks that Twitter gave them to identify them as the celebrity's original account.
Originally, the blue tick was designed to protect well-known persons against imitation and to counteract inaccurate information.

Twitter has announced earlier in March via their official account that effective 1st of April they would stop their legacy verified feature and they would completely remove their legacy verified ticks. To maintain their status people can definitely join the paid program.
Twitter introduced the legacy tick mark system to help the public distinguish renowned sports persons, influencers, celebrities etc. from impersonators.
There was no cost for this verification back in the day until twitter was taken over by Elon Musk and he tried to jazz things up.
